Costa Rican Colon

Named after Christopher Columbus, the Costa Rican colon is a legal tender for Costa Rica, divided into 100 equal parts, called cents.

After independence, in 1821 they abandoned the use of the Spanish currency and switched to using the real and choosing the peso, and it was not until 1986 that it was decided to use the colon as a legal currency.

Currently, the coins in circulation are 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 500 colons. Previously, there were 1 and 2 colons, but they were withdrawn from the Central Bank of Costa Rica and no longer have market value. For banknotes, there are 1 thousand, 2 000, 5 000, 10 000, 20,000, and 50,000.

In Costa Rica, a 100-colon coin is also known as a “tile”, where 1000 banknotes are known as “red”, and 5000 colons are known as “toucans”. This is due to the image previously printed on the money on the reverse side.

According to the Central Bank, the economy closed at 7.6% growth in 2021, making it the highest growth rate since 2008. It was also placed above all forecasts.

On the other hand, the agency expects production in Costa Rica to improve by 5.4% by 2022. However, the country will have to deal with 23% poverty and 14% unemployment.
