This weekend, information was released that has put Televisa on alert, after María del Refugio Abarca, the so-called Cuquita, the widow of Vicente Fernández, asked the Mexican authorities to act to ensure that the law is respected and “companies” are not allowed to earn money at the expense of the name of the charro from Huentitan.
The mother of the Three Foals assured that there is no censorship for the series El Último Rey, but that the refusal of the family for the production to be broadcast is due to a “theme of dignity” related to the performer of classic ranchers such as La ley del monte and For women like you.
In a statement, the lady said before the imminent premiere of Vicente Fernández's announced bioseries, The Last King: The Son of the People, that Televisa intends to “steal the image” of the remembered singer, since his name and elements surrounding his image are registered trademarks of the family.
It was on Vicente Fernández's official social networks that his widow expressed that he does not want “even a tribute” from Televisa, because his objectives respond to economic interests.
It was also said sad that “gentlemen who said they were friends and shared bread at our table” had devised a plan to “steal” the rights of the singer from Jalisco when he was hospitalized: “I would like to see that they had tried to do it when he was alive!” , he wrote in reference to Pablo Montero, the protagonist of the story.
In the midst of this information, the big question has been what will happen to the announced bioseries, since even a special program that was planned to be broadcast on Saturday at 21:00 hours, hosted by the journalist Mara Patricia Castañeda, ended up not going on the air and instead an episode of La rose of Guadalupe.
And it is that the law firm Del Toro Carazo issued a statement in which it reported that the Mexican Institute of Intellectual Property and judicial authorities have banned Televisa from broadcasting the series, for using without permission the brand and image of the fellow actor in films such as El mason.
It transpired that Televisa received notification ordering the suspension of El Último rey, by Court 10 and IMPI, since Friday, as confirmed by Fernández lawyer Marco Antonio Del Toro.
Among the materials that the television station was required to suspend the broadcast were this special “behind the scenes”, the announced series, as well as the advertising propaganda that used the name Vicente Fernández or the nickname by which El charro de Huentitán was known.
However, the promos for the series produced by Juan Osorio continued to appear on the air and the same producer declared on Monday afternoon that the series “is going on air”.
“I knew that the Fernández family didn't agree very much, but I have always trusted my work, I really trust the adaptation of the writers who are doing some great scripts... I don't see why it's such a problem if we are bringing to the screen the life and effort that was made in this Fernández family,” said the director for Firsthand.
“Doña Cuquita should be given the opportunity to see the content, to watch this part of the series and then to act, then to criticize. Then to say that Pablo Montero would never have played the character of Vicente,” Osorio added.
What will happen in the following remains a mystery, since one version suggests that the suspension was ordered to Televisa, however, the one who produces this project is the brand new merger of Televisa Univision, so it would represent a different legal entity, a situation that would benefit the San Ángel company, the less momentarily.
