Former Mexican President Vicente Fox once again took action against Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). This time, the reason for their criticism was the cancellation of the Full-Time Schools program, which was born in 2008 with the aim of improving the quality of learning through the extension and efficient use of students' school time.
Just last February 28, the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the new operating rules for the program The School Is Our (LEEN) and the elimination of full-time schools. The news was also released by the head of the SEP, Delfina Gómez Álvarez, who assured that the improvement of those educational institutions that require it should be prioritized to ensure a safe return to the classroom.
Faced with this, the former president shared the following message through his official Twitter account: “Like the “donkey who played the flute!” Criminal closing full-time schools. 4 million children will pay the dire consequences. Lopez, where is your head? This is stupid!”
Fox's criticism arose after the video released by the panist Ricardo Anaya Cortés during the morning of this Monday, March 14, in which he also launched himself against the determination made by the Tabasco administration to eliminate the program.
In this regard, the 43-year-old politician stressed that the program supported children because they could use school facilities to do their homework, have language or music classes, while their parents finished their working days. He also stressed that students enrolled in this modality had the possibility of consuming nutritious foods that would encourage their physical and intellectual development.
“Cancel the dreams and future of 4 million children on the whim of one man? It is so eager to show that they are different that they don't think, they don't evaluate, they don't care about the consequences,” said Anaya Cortés. His criticism was supported by Fox Quesada who, in addition to calling the Mexican Government's actions “stupid”, indicated that he “deeply” feels the program's disappearance because education must be full-time.
The fact is that, according to the blue and white, the Full-Time Schools also served as a support to parents, mostly single, so that they could finish their working days “with the peace of mind that the children were safe and well cared for”.
Likewise, the Network for Children's Rights in Mexico (REDIM) joined the voices condemning the decision to eliminate the program, which is estimated to have benefited more than 3.6 million of children and adolescents in the country, who could become victims of violence and inequalities following the cancellation of the program created during the six-year term of Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.
REDIM highlighted that the program benefits schools with a high degree of marginalization, located in rural or indigenous areas, so its cancellation leaves at least 65.8% of the population without the first food they consumed during the day and without the possibility of addressing the malnutrition and malnutrition that affects girls, boys and teenagers.
In addition, he stressed that the cancellation of the program “is a resolution that is also contrary to the best interests of children, a principle established in the 4th constitutional and according to which the decisions of the authorities must be analyzed and evaluated in terms of greater benefit to children,” said the Network.
