Visitors leave with nothing, as Atletico Madrid secure 2-1 home win against Athletic Club

Victory over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, leaves Diego Simeone’s team with 62 points in the competition after 18 games

Atletico Madrid eased past Athletic Club in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday at Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico arrived with the intention of increasing their league score following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in their previous game. Athletic Bilbao, on the other hand, were looking to extend their winning run after a 2-1 victory against Granada. Following today's result, Atletico are in 1st place on the table and has 62 points while Athletic Bilbao sit in 8th with 33 points after 18 matches.

It was an impressive opening from The Lions, with Iker Muniain finding the net at the 21 minute mark. However, their lead was short lived, as Marcos Llorente equalised for Atletico just before half-time to see out the first half 1-1.

Atletico started strong in the second half and were able to dominate, thanks to Luis Suarez finding the net at the 51 minute mark. When the final wisthle blew, the result was 2-1 to Atletico.

For Atletico, Angel Correa, Saul Niguez, Lucas Torreira, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Renan Lodi, came on for Mikel Vesga, Unai Lopez, Raul Garcia, Oscar De Marcos and Iker Muniain. Athletic Bilbao replaced Dani Garcia, Unai Vencedor, Asier Villalibre, Ander Capa and Jon Morcillo with Mikel Vesga, Unai Lopez, Raul Garcia, Oscar De Marcos and Iker Muniain.

There were bookings for Felipe and Renan Lodi from Atletico. For Athletic Bilbao, Oscar De Marcos and Mikel Vesga saw yellow.

Athletic Bilbao and Atletico will next play away to Celta Vigo and Getafe respectively.
