(ATR) Martin Sorrell will speak at the new Digital Summit next month, with an update on the Olympic Channel among the highlights.
The head of WPP, the world’s largest marketing and advertising company, will deliver the morning keynote address on 'The Mission of Sport' at the April 20 summit, part of the convention program in Lausanne.
At the IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur last summer, Sorrell warned the IOC that failure to embrace digital innovations may lead to the Olympics "becoming irrelevant". He urged the IOC to embrace the technological revolution, saying it had taken a "very bold step" to create the Olympic Channel.
SportAccord Convention delegates will also hear from Yiannis Exarchos, CEO of Olympic Broadcasting Services, who will talk about what’s in store for the much-anticipated Olympic Channel.
Representatives from Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter are among other speakers at the Digital Summit.
"Connecting fans with athletes and their sports is driving content and engagement across all of the sports movement. The more we connect with each other the louder our voices become and the better the user experience becomes," SportAccord’s release said.
Kevin Cote, representing Facebook’s global sports partnerships, will hold a best-practice workshop for international sports federations. Sam Li, head of content acquisition and strategic partnerships at Sina Sports, will do similar.
After lunch, Alex Huot, the IOC’s head of social media, will deliver the afternoon keynote address titled ‘All you need is LOVE’.
Twitter’s global sports chair Alex Trickett and Snapchat business development official Juan David Borrero are scheduled to give best-practice workshops.
The summit concludes with a panel session addressing ‘How sport can best prepare for what’s coming up next in social engagement’.
SportAccord managing director Nis Hatt tells Around the Rings: "The overall purpose is to say ‘what goes on within this community of platforms in social media with a view to all the IFs… how can they benefit from that."
Hatt said the idea is to develop and perhaps expand the Digital Summit in future years.
Registered delegates are asked to confirm their attendance at the Digital Summit by April 8.
The SportAccord Convention runs from April 17 to 22.
