(ATR) The 2018 world figure skating championships begin on Wednesday in Milan, Italy without two of the sport’s biggest stars.
PyeongChang men’s gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan and women’s silver medalist Yevgenia Medvedeva are both out through injury. Medvedeva’s absence makes her friend and fellow Russian Alina Zagitova the clear favorite to repeat her gold medal performance from PyeongChang.
Among the other medalists skipping the event are Olympic pairs silver medalists Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China, who will not be defending their 2017 World title.
With the world championships held only one month after the Winter Olympics, top skaters often skip the event due to injury, fatigue or post-Olympic business opportunities. The World Championships run through Sunday.

The theme for this year’s agenda is themed "Shaping the Future of Clean Sport".
Sheikh Ahmad, ANOC Leaders in Chile
The Executive Council of the Association of National Olympic Committees will hold its first ever meeting in Santiago, Chile.
President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Sabah will lead the 27-member council for the March 23 gathering. Planning for the General Assembly in Tokyo at the end of November will be on the agenda. That meeting in Tokyo will include elections for the next four-year cycle.
On March 22, the IOC Olympic Solidarity Commission, which is also chaired by Al-Sabah, will be held a day before the ANOC meeting.
The meeting of the Council is a tribute to the rise of Neven Ilic as president of Panam Sports and IOC membership during the past year. Formerly Ilic was the president of the Chilean Olympic Committee.
