(ATR) The World Anti-Doping Agency says its mission to extract data from the Moscow anti-doping lab is ongoing, delaying a report from the Compliance Review Commission.
"The work in the lab is still proceeding and the team is making excellent progress," a WADA spokesperson confirmed to Around the Rings. "We expect the mission to be completed soon but it’s not possible to be exact.
"The CRC met in Montreal on 14-15 January and will deliver its report only once the team has left Russia."
WADA officials entered the Moscow lab on Jan. 10 to retrieve LIMS data to verify manipulated positive doping tests from the state sponsored doping scheme. WADA views the data as key to prosecuting covered up anti-doping violations.
The data was part of a compromise reached by the CRC to conditionally declare the Russian Anti-Doping Agency compliant with the WADA code. RUSADA originally had a deadline of Dec. 31 to allow WADA access to the data. A team from WADA travelled to Moscow in December, but was blocked by Russian authorities from retrieving the data.
The CRC was expected to produce a recommendation to WADA’s Executive Committee about whether RUSADA had satisfied its conditions for compliance after its meeting. The ExCo would then review the recommendation and any additional reports before meeting on Jan. 22.
That report will now be produced only after WADA finishes its extraction of data from Moscow. The delay was first reported by Reuters.
"The only thing they (CRC) said was they don’t want to send that until they have confirmation the mission is out of Russia," Olivier Niggli, WADA director general told Reuters.
"It is not just out of safety concerns it is also to ensure that there is no interference with the mission in Russia."
Niggli said he does not expect the report to take long to produce, and members of the ExCo will have time to review it before its meeting.
Despite missing the Dec. 31 deadline, WADA has reiterated that it will take that information into account when determining RUSADA’s compliance.
