(ATR) The Commonwealth Games Federation is already discussing bids for the 2030 edition of the Games.

A little closer to today, Durban, South Africa and Edmonton, Canada will be the candidate cities for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. They were the only cities to declare their candidacy during Tuesday’s General Assembly of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

"They are serious. There's no doubt about it," CGF president Prince Imran said.

Glasgow, host of the 2014 edition of the Commonwealth Games which start on Wednesday, was the site of the meeting.

CGF CEO Mike Hooper said "it’s really encouraging" to have bids and potential bids through 2030.

For the 2026 bid, a joint Welsh bid from Cardiff, Newport, and Swansea is being considered.

The CGF has said it wants to introduce quotas for the games so the costs and size do not become prohibitive for interested cities.

Malaysian Remembrances

The mood at Wednesday’s opening ceremony at Celtic Park in Glasgow will not be totally celebratory.

Malaysian team members marching in the ceremony will wear black armbands to commemorate the passengers and crew of last week’s Malaysia Airlines crash in Ukraine.

A total of 294 people, including 44 Malaysians, died in the crash.

During Tuesday’s flag raising ceremony at the Commonwealth Games Village, for Team Malaysia, a moment’s silence was held for the victims, and the Malaysian flag was only raised half staff.

CGF president Prince Imran, who is from Malaysia, said the flag ceremony was "very moving."

IOC Chief to Attend

The Commonwealth Games will get a bit of recognition from the head of the IOC.

Thomas Bach will attend the opening ceremony on Wednesday, as well as some events on Thursday.

Twelve sports will be contested on Thursday, including Olympic sports like badminton, hockey, judo, and swimming.
