(ATR) The new Tokyo 2020 Games logo was created by Tokyo art designer Keinjiro Sano and is said to represent the Olympic theme of unity.
"When the world comes together for Tokyo 2020, we will experience the joy of uniting as one team. By accepting everyone in the world as equals, we will learn the full meaning of coming together as one. The Tokyo 2020 emblems were created to symbolize the power of this unity," according to organizers.
Sano is the founder of MR_DESIGN Inc., an art design firm in Tokyo. He has also garnered several awards in design and art throughout his career with some of his works featured in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris.
"The black color of the central column represents diversity, the combination of all colors. The shape of the circle represents an inclusive world in which everyone accepts each other. The red of the circle represents the power of every beating heart," Sano says.
The T in the Olympic logo represents the "Tokyo Tomorrow Team," while the Paralympic logo features an equal sign reflecting on the theme of equality in the Paralympics.
The new designs replace the candidate city logo Tokyo submitted to the IOC in their bid book. The old logo featured a circle of flowers and the Tokyo 2020 name separated by the red circle found in the flag of Japan.
The design of Sano comes out on a day that marks until the start of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games. Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori calls on the people of Japan and the world to unite around the new emblems.
"The moment we have all been waiting for has finally arrived. The Tokyo 2020 Games emblems are a wonderful work of art that represent the aspirations and the ultimate goal that athletes around the world aim to achieve - taking part in the Olympic and Paralympic Games," Mori said in a statement.
IOC Coordination Commission chair John Coates says the emblem shows how the Tokyo Games will be a global celebration that all can take part in.
"The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games emblem is a powerful symbol of Tokyo’s Games vision. By embracing the concept of unity in diversity, it shows the unique ability of the Olympic Games to bring together people from all over the world in peace and harmony," Coates said.
The many sponsors of the Tokyo Games will now be able to use the new emblem in their advertisements to show their support.
Next up for the Tokyo organizing committee is a decision by the IOC to approve a change in the national stadium plans. Tokyo 2020 decided to abandon the original plan as a result of lowering support rates and ballooning construction costs for the project.
The IOC is likely to make a decision on the changes at the IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur next week.
