(ATR) Tokyo 2020 received more than 200,000 applications to be volunteers during the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.
Organizers announced a final application total of 204,680. The last deadline to apply, for those with visual impairments, was January 18. Organizers began soliciting applications in September.
Tokyo 2020 will recruit around 80,000 volunteers for the upcoming Summer Olympics. Of the applicants, Tokyo 2020 says that 36 percent came from overseas, and that 64 percent of applicants are female.
"A significant number of young people have applied, and the relatively large number of non-Japanese applicants highlights the strong level of global interest in the Tokyo 2020 Games," a Tokyo 2020 statement said.
In addition to the Olympic and Paralympic Volunteers, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will recruit around 30,000 volunteers to help with the influx of tourists during the Games. Of that number, 10,000 will come from existing Rugby World Cup 2019 volunteers.
The TMG reached its target of 20,000 volunteer applications in early December, two weeks before its final deadline.
Tokyo 2020 actually received the lowest number of applicants for a summer Olympics since 2004 in Athens. Rio 2016and London 2012 received over 240,000 applicants each, Beijing 2008 received over 1 million applicants, and Athens received 160,000.
