Tokyo, Japan, December 24, 2018: The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games needs 80,000 volunteers but more than double, 162,000, have applied, organisers revealed.

Volunteer recruitment for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games was well on track with roughly 162,000 people completing the initial online procedure to become "the face of the Games" , Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori said.

The online registration, which started in September and ended on December 21, has shown that 60 per cent of the applicants want to work for at least 11 days, according to Kyodo News Agency.

Registered applicants also had until Thursday last week to vote for the official nickname to be given to the volunteers working at competition venues and the athletes’ village.

The shortlisted nominees were "Field Cast", "Games Anchor" and "Shining Blue". The winner will be announced later this month.

Applications for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s own volunteer programme also ended last Friday, with 28,689 applicants registering. These Metropolitn volunteers will meet visitors at airports, train stations and major tourist spots. Tokyo will draw 20,000 volunteers from the application pool and accept an additional 10,000 from local municipalities.
