New digital fan experience now live with Olympic trivia and magic moments; bracket and fantasy challenges to be available for the Olympic Summer Games
(19 May, 2021)
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has launched the Tokyo 2020 FanZone, an interactive gamification experience on olympics.com and the Tokyo 2020 official website and mobile app to engage and unite fans around the world leading up to and throughout the Olympic Games.
FanZone is a series of fun and competitive fan products, with the first two, Trivia and Magic Moments, now available; new and exciting team bracket and fantasy challenges will be unlocked closer to the Olympic Games. FanZone unites diverse audiences with a focus on Gen Z through four games and is supported by members of The Olympic Partner (TOP) programme: Panasonic, Swatch/OMEGA and Bridgestone, which are providing prizes for participants and winners.
"The Tokyo 2020 FanZone will bring the Olympic experience to life and connect global communities around the world – and during these unprecedented times, people need this connection more than ever," said IOC Digital Engagement & Marketing Director Christopher Carroll. "FanZone serves as an important element of our digital efforts for fans to feel they are part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This platform attempts to ignite their competitive spirit and bring us closer together."
In the lead-up to the Olympic Games, fans can take part in regular Trivia competitions, some occurring bi-weekly and others taking place live every two days, with 17 contests in total. Each will test user knowledge on past Olympic Games and featured athletes, while creating social buzz and excitement among eligible participants, who can win prizes.
Also ahead of Tokyo 2020, Magic Moments will take fans on a journey back to the thrilling highlights of past Olympic Games, allowing them to vote on their most cherished moments through the lens of a variety of themes, and look forward to current competitors forging new milestones in Tokyo.
When the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 begin, the Fantasy and Bracket Challenges will bring the fantasy sports experience to the Olympics as they are happening. With the Fantasy Challenge, fans create a team by selecting their 10 favourite athletes from individual sports. Fans can start a league with friends or join an existing one to compete against other teams. And in the Bracket Challenge, fans can attempt to select the winning bracket in each team sport while competing with friends and other fans around the world.
Eligible participants of the FanZone games will be entered into a prize draw. For each prize draw, there are five different prizes to be won, including an ultimate bundle of Olympic merchandise. Prize draw entry is open only to residents of select countries and age restrictions apply – please see the terms and conditions for details.
Fans can sign up and start playing at https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/en/fanzone/ and in the Tokyo 2020 app. The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 app is available for free download through the iOS and Android stores.
The introduction of FanZone supports Olympic Agenda 2020+5, the IOC’s strategic roadmap, which was approved at the 137th IOC Session in March 2021; Recommendation 8 of the roadmap is: "Grow digital engagement with people". FanZone promotes fan interaction and engagement on a global scale, driving excitement before, during and after Games time.
