(ATR) Japan’s new National Stadium could host the women’s football final instead of the men’s during the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
According to the Japan Times, a source familiar with the situation said organizers are contemplating the move to ease the schedule on the primary Olympic venue towards the end of the Games.
With the Closing Ceremony of the Games slated for Aug. 9, the men’s football final on Aug. 8 could be moved to Nissan Stadium in Yokohama to reduce the need to change the venue for different competitions.
The original plan had the men’s football final in the early afternoon, followed by track and field events in the evening on Aug. 8. The following day features the men’s marathon in the morning and the Closing Ceremony at night. Those performing in the Closing Ceremony on Aug. 9 also need the venue to rehearse on Aug. 8, according to the source.
The move would potentially ease the struggle of reconfiguring the venue for the different disciplines.
The Japan Football Association reportedly wants a football game to be held at the Tokyo Olympics showpiece venue, setting up the stage for the women’s football final to be played there on Aug. 7.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will begin on July 24 and conclude Aug. 9.
