Buenos Aires, September 11. It’s not just the best young athletes in the world who are preparing to compete at Buenos Aires 2018. The Obelisk, the ultimate urban icon of the Argentine capital, is getting ready for the first Olympic opening ceremony open to all public.
The date is set for October 6 at 18:00hrs local time in the heart of Buenos Aires. With just 25 days to go, works have already started so that it will be an unprecedented show.
Event production is in the hands of Ozono Producciones, an Argentine company that specialises in international shows. Fuerza Bruta, an Argentine theatre company that has fascinated the global public with its innovative performances that challenge the senses, will be in charge of artistic direction.
The opening ceremony will mark the start of the biggest multisport and cultural event in the world. It will take place over 12 days and will inspire a whole generation with the 4012 athletes as examples of hard work and perseverance. It will also be the first edition of an Olympic competition with gender equality.
Buenos Aires will be the stage for a global event that will be followed by thousands in the streets and millions via television and social media. The athletes competing from 206 countries will bring together hundreds of members of the Olympic family who will visit the Argentine capital to attend the Games.

The Buenos Aires 2018 youth Olympic flame was lit on July 24 at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece. Under the slogan #UnitedByTheFlame, the Torch Tour will cover 14,000 kilometres in two months, carrying Olympism’s message to every corner of Argentina. During its journey there will be relays in 17 cities. It will also highlight various iconic geographical sites in Argentina such as Iguazu Falls and the Perito Moreno Glacier. Its trip will finish on October 6 in the first Olympic opening ceremony outside of tradition stadiums and open to all public in front of the Obelisk in downtown Buenos Aires.
