Over 1,200 national sport professionals enjoyed a unique experience in Brazil, on Saturday the 13th. the 10th anniversary of the Brazilian Olympic Institute (IOB). Sponsored by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) the first edition of the Brazilian Olympic Congress was held at the WTC Events Center bringing together global sport management leaders.
Among the leading national sport personalities were Bernardinho, the former women’s and men’s volleyball coach, COB Sports Director Jorge Bichara, and Antonio Carlos Gomes, the Educational Consultant of the Brazilian Academy of Coaches. From abroad came Bob Bowman, former Michael Phelps’ Coach and Swimming Head Coach at Arizona State University; Chelsea Warr, Performance Director of Performance, UK Sport; Michael Vesper, Senior Consultant of the International Olympic Committee, Maurits Hendriks, High Performance Director at NOC*NSF; Chris O’Brien, Deputy High Performance Director, Australian Institute of Sport (AIS); and Aaron Coutts, Distinguished Professor in Sport and Exercise Science, University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
"All our objectives were fully achieved. The presentations led to significant knowledge exchanges attended by our distinguished guests. All Congress participants were much impressed by all the work COB has been developing. This was precisely our goal", COB General Director Rogério Sampaio, says.
The event was officially opened, at 9 am, by COB president Paulo Wanderley Teixeira. In the presence of Minister General Augusto Heleno, Head of the Institutional Security Office, who was IOB Director for 6 years, and the Special Secretary of Sport Marco Aurélio Vieira, Wanderley emphasized the relevance of the Agnelo/Piva Law to the development of Brazilian sport and to the success of the Congress.
"The Agnelo/Piva Law is the main driver of Brazilin sport and keeping it is critical. Thanks to it we have reached the 13th position among 208 nations at the Olympic Games Rio 2016. As to the Brazilian Olympic Congress, I am very happy and proud of this first edition. This was a project carefully designed and implemented by the IOB", COB president remarked.
Subjects like sport organization systems, strategies for competitiveness increase, team management, training loads for Olympic Athletes and health in sport were discussed in the morning. In the afternoon the speakers talked about ethics, governance and compliance in sport, talent identification and development and how to change data into strategic information. Closing the Congress Bob Bowman presented its "Golden Rules: Ten Steps to World Class Excellence in Your Life and Work". By the way, Bowman was much impressed with Congress organization.
"The structure was quite innovative with three stages and simultaneous lectures. I also enjoyed the external interaction area and the high quality of all presenters. I really loved the event , Michael Phelps" coach said.
During the breaks between lectures, the Olympic Congress also offered several activities that resulted from joint actions between COB and the sport confederations. The Brazilian Confederation of Ice Sports (CBDG), for example, built a street curling rink inviting participants to learn more about this winter sport. On its turn, the Brazilian Table Tennis Confederation (CBTM) brought young Bruna Takahashi, the best placed Brazilian athlete in the world ranking, to play with the public. Experiences were also offered involving the following sports: athletics, badminton and indoor climbing.
The Olympic Laboratory was also there enabling participants learn about biomechanics, biochemistry, physiology and thermography. COB also set up a Time Brasil store offering various licensed products and the Brazilian Olympic Space where the history of the Games was told by displaying photographs, medals, torches, posters and souvenirs.
All attendees were very happy to be able to enjoy a common space for a democratic contact with sport. COB is currently implementing a policy of building closer ties with society, whose aim was fully achieved. We had top quality content and counted on speakers who surpassed all expectations bringing us knowledge that can inspire transformation actions", rounded off IOB Manager Soraya Carvalho.
