(ATR) IOC Member Paul Tergat is all but set to be the next President of the Kenya Olympic Committee (NOC-K).
Tergat was the only candidate cleared to run for the NOC presidency according to reports from AllAfrica. Outgoing President Kip Keino was expected to challenge Tergat for the presidency, but reports say he pulled out over lack of support. Attempts to reach Tergat and Keino were unsuccessful.
Keino was quoted by AllAfrica as saying no federation leader would endorse him in his bid for reelection. He added that Tergat did not speak to him before announcing his intention to run.
"He has never come to me for anything, yet I am the one who took him to the IOC," Keino said, reportedly frustrated by the process.
The election will be held on May 5 in Nairobi. Elections will be contested for a total of 11 positions.
NOC-K recently passed a new constitution, ending an autonomy standoff that threatened a suspension by the IOC.
Kenya had been under threat of suspension after conflicts between the country’s sports ministry and the NOC-K created autonomy issues. After the Rio 2016 Olympics numerous NOC-K officialswere arrested for graft, and the sports ministry attempted to disband the NOC citing "mismanagement."
Stephen Arap Soi and Ben Ekumbo, two of the officials caught up in the scandal, are not running for positions in next week's elections.
