(ATR) Jürg Stahl is elected to a second term as president of Swiss Olympic, the National Olympic Committee for the Swiss Confederation.
The vote was unanimous, notable for the number in favor, 431.
"I am very pleased about the re-election and the confidence you have shown me," Stahl is quoted on the website of Swiss Olympic.
"Swiss sport is strong and, as President of Swiss Olympic, I will do my best to keep it that way. I am looking forward to the next four years and the cooperation with the associations and with the newly formed Executive Council," Stahl said following the November 20 vote which was held virtually.
Stahl acknowledged the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on sport. But he said he is optimistic about the way sport could help heal from this medical crisis.
"Swiss Sport has been doing an Ironman since last spring. The good thing is, nobody is on their own. All member associations and partner organizations of Swiss Olympic have the same goal. As a sports family, we want to emerge stronger from this difficult situation," Stahl said in his opening remarks to the Swiss Sports Parliament, as the annual meeting is known.
Despite the economic pressures wrought by the pandemic, Swiss Olympic will receive more money from its principal funding sources, lottery companies Swisslos and Loterie Romande via Sport-Toto-Gesellschaft.
Income generated by the two lotteries in 2020 means 45.9 million Swiss francs. The 2019 revenue was 43.4 million Swiss francs.
"I am convinced that this year's contributions by the two lottery companies Swisslos and Loterie Romande in the corona pandemicwith its immense effects on sport are doubly important," said Roger Hegi, Director of the Sport-Toto-Gesellschaft.
Stahl said that the lottery revenue along with government support will make it possible for Swiss Olympic to move beyond the "Ironman" test posed by the pandemic.
"The lotteries - and thus the cantons - are, together with the federal government, the most important donors of Swiss sport. We are confident that these financial resources - in addition to the federal stabilization package - will help the associations and clubs to overcome the Corona crisis and that we can end this Ironman successfully."
Also at the Swiss Sport Parliament, Virginie Faivre named honorary member of the Association for her work leading the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne in January.
A freestyle skier, she took over as president of the organizing committee following the death of Patrick Bauman in October 2018.
