(ATR) Bangkok, Thailand was confirmed as the host of the 2018 SportAccord Convention today.
The announcement came at the opening ceremony for the 2017 convention in Aarhus, Denmark. Bangkok last hosted the Olympic family at the 2014 Association of National Olympic Committees General Assembly.
SportAccord said in a statement it hopes to make the 2018 convention "a family event for delegates and their families" in the land of smiles, Thailand. The release also notes the city was chosen for the bevy of direct flights there and being the "hub of Southeast Asia."
"I would like to thank the government of Thailand for supporting the Convention, which will be the sixteenth edition," Francesco Ricci Bitti, president of SportAccord Convention and ASOIF, said in a statement. "I am confident our collaboration with Bangkok and the government of Thailand will provide an excellent platform for the international sport community to build on the excellent work achieved at past Conventions while more than meeting the needs of our Stakeholders and delegates."
The convention will be held from April 15-20, 2018. The SportAccord Convention brings together major stakeholders in the Olympic Movement under the international sport federation umbrella group SportAccord.
