Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates AC has welcomed the inclusion of seven Australians on International Olympic Committee (IOC) Commissions announced overnight.
Australians will be represented on seven of the 26 IOC Commissions which provide advice to the IOC Executive across a range of portfolios.
Mr Coates said the inclusion of four Australian Olympians is particularly gratifying.
"These Commissions do vital work for the Olympic movement and it’s important that the broad skills and experience of Olympians informs the advice coming to the Executive.
"I am very pleased to see Kitty Chiller, Catherine Freeman, James Tomkins, and Mark Woodforde - all Olympians, so actively involved."
"As IOC President Thomas Bach has noted, in addition to providing assistance to the IOC and Organising Committees for the Olympic Games, the Commissions assist in many other activities that are so important for the role sport can play in our world.
"Mr Bach pointed to topics such as "Sport for All", cooperation with public and private organisations to enable sport to service humanity, the fight against doping, sports ethics, environmental issues and financial and educational support for developing countries. The list goes on."
The Australians appointed to IOC Commissions are:
John Coates AC: Chair, Legal Affairs Commission, Tokyo 2020 Games Coordination Commission
Helen Brownlee AM: Olympic Education Commission
James Tomkins OAM: Athletes’ Commission, Olympic Programme Commission, Marketing Commission
Kitty Chiller: Athletes’ Entourage Commission
Catherine Freeman OAM: Sport and Active Society Commission
Mark Woodforde OAM: Communications Commission
