(ATR) For the third time, the northern Japanese city of Sapporo plays host to the continent’s best winter athletes.

Sapporo hosted the first two editions of the Asian Winter Games in 1986 and 1990. Now it hosts the eighth edition which will feature athletes from 30 Asian countries, as well as two from Oceania.

Australia and New Zealand will make AWG debuts as part of an Olympic Council of Asia program to help develop winter athletes from Oceania. For these games athletes from these two countries will compete but not be eligible to earn medals.

Also in Sapporo will be organizers from PyeongChang 2018 and Tokyo 2020, the next two Olympic Games in Asia. Tokyo 2020 said in a statement attending the Games will provide a "foretaste of the experience that awaits" for the next Summer Games.

The city has been decorated, and athletes are arriving to receive their credentials. The 2017 Asian Winter Games will run from Feb. 19-26.

Around the Rings will be on the scene reporting on the Games in both English and Japanese.
