(ATR) Rome’s city council is expected to support Mayor Virginia Raggi’s decision to reject the city’s continued bid for the 2024 Summer Games when it votes this week.
The Associated Press reports the vote will be on Thursday.
This is the same city assembly which overwhelmingly voted to support the bid. But that was before Raggi became mayor in June.
Now her anti-establishment 5-Star Movement holds a majority on the city council.
Raggi cited the costs of the failed 2020 Olympic bid, ended by previous premier Mario Monti for financial reasons, and the costs of Rome 2024 as her reasons for rejecting the bid last week.
If the city council sides with Raggi, it will leave three candidate cities to fight it out for 2024 Olympic hosting rights - Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris. The IOC votes in September 2017.
Budapest 2024 names new CEO, Hungary Government Approves Olympic Guarantee
Budapest 2024 is welcoming a new CEO.
Attila Mihókis replacing Miklos Fekete, who had been on the job for eight months.
Mihókis currently the CEO of MindSense, an investment and consulting company that he founded a little over a year ago.
The Hungarian government meanwhile has authorized Prime Minister Viktor Orban to sign the Olympic and Paralympic document that guarantees funding for the building of venues for the 2024 Games.
The guarantees are a requirement of the second of three bid dossiers to the IOC, covering governance, legal and venue funding. The deadline for submitting this bid dossier is Oct. 7.
Zurich City Council Puts Limits on Possible 2026 Bid
The Zurich city council is outlining requirements needed if the city is to host the Olympic Winter Games in 2026.
Swiss media report that the conditions include having the federal government and Swiss Olympic take the lead in organizing the Games and that Zurich would not create any new sports facilities or other infrastructure for 2026.
Zurich is a part of a bid by Eastern Switzerland called "Olympische Winterspiele 2026 Graubünden und Partner". The other three regional bids being considered are: "2026 – Games for our Future" (multi-regional), "Switzerland 2026" (multi-regional) and "2026 The Swiss Made Winter Games" (Western Switzerland).
Earlier this month, Swiss Olympic moved up the date for deciding the winning bid from September 2017 to March 2017. Swiss Olympic told Around the Rings that the additional time was needed "in order to organize the federal procedure that will enable us to secure the support of all levels of the Swiss government."
Building up strong government support could be key in a favorable outcome in a public referendum. A bid by St. Moritz and Davos for the 2022 Games was rejected by voters in 2013.
Switzerland has twice hosted the Winter Olympics, both times in St. Moritz in 1928 and 1948.
The 2026 Winter Olympic host city will be selected at the 132nd IOC Session in 2019.
