The Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Löfven, will join the country’s delegation to the IOC Session in Lausanne this week, where he will personally convey his government’s unequivocal support for Stockholm Åre 2026’s bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sweden for the first time in history.

Alongside the Prime Minister, the Stockholm Åre 2026 delegation will also feature the heads of government for each host region and municipality, including the Mayor of Stockholm Anna König Jerlmyr; the Governor of Stockholm County, Sven Erik Österberg; the Mayor of Åre, Daniel Danielsson; Sara Tigerström Monfelt, Project Manager for the town of Falun; and the Mayor of Sigulda, Latvia, Ugis Mitrevics. Also with Stockholm Åre 2026 for the IOC Session is a decorated team of athletes with 20 Olympic and Paralympic medals between them, plus leaders of globally recognised Swedish companies including Volvo, Ericsson and Permobil.

Prime Minister Löfven will use the opportunity to emphasise that hosting its first ever Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be a national project for Sweden, a nation with winter sports in its DNA. The Swedish government is fully supportive of the bid and the Games.

In a recent interview, Prime Minister Löfven stressed that Stockholm Åre 2026 would be a Winter Games for all of Sweden:

"We are convinced that an Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sweden will be fantastic, and something for the whole country to look forward to," he said. "It will bring Sweden together and we will benefit in many different areas, such as jobs, business, integration and public health. Everything is connected and it is important that we see the bigger picture. It is good for Sweden and we are good at delivering major events."

Commenting on Prime Minister Löfven’s decision to travel to Switzerland to back the Stockholm Åre 2026 bid, CEO Richard Brisius said:

"The Prime Minister of Sweden travelling to the Olympic Capital to represent Stockholm Åre 2026 shows the depth of national support for our bid. From delivering an unforgettable winter wonderland experience for athletes and fans, to operating an innovative, climate-positive Games, the Swedish national government will be with us every step of the way, backed by our regions, municipalities and enthusiastic corporate community."
