(ATR) Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich takes home gold at the ISA World Surfing Games in Miyazaki, Japan.
This is Mulanovich’s second gold medal after winning at the 2004 edition of the Games in Ecuador.
"This Gold Medal means the world for surfers in Peru. Two Peruvians just won Golds at the Pan Am Games in Lima and winning here just adds to that. Surfing is growing so much in Latin America and Peru is here to stay." said Mulanovich.
A mere 0.17 points separated the winners of the other medals in the women’s competition.
Brazil’s Silvana Lima earned silver at 12.77 points, South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag the bronze with 12.64 points, and the USA's Carissa Moore won copper with 12.6 points.
Brazil took a strong lead with 4,420 potential points while Mulanovich’s gold places Peru in second with 4,330 potential points with the men’s competition to come.
The United States is in third with 4,235, and Australia in fourth with 4,203.
"This gives Sofia a great position to head into the 2020 ISA World Surfing Games to seek out one of the Tokyo 2020 qualification slots for the women. I am sure she is going to go to bed tonight thinking about her chances for 2020," said ISA President Fernando Aguerre.
South Africa, Japan, Israel and New Zealand have each provisionally secured a woman’s spot in Tokyo 2020.
Qualification is on a continental basis, with the top eligible man and woman from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Europe earning slots in the Olympic Games. The Americas’ slots were contested at the Pan American Games in Lima.
Qualification for the summer Olympics in Tokyo will be completed by the 2019 World Surf League Championship Tour and the 2020 ISA World Surfing Games.
As of today, the men’s competition is underway, which will also determine the team world champion.
The final day of the men’s competition is September 15, which is also the closing ceremony.
