The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Bid Committee has welcomed publication of an economic impact report on UEFA EURO 2016 – arguably the world’s third largest sporting event – which was held across France during June and July 2016 in 10 host cities.

2.4 million tickets were sold across the tournament generating a 92% occupancy while 4 million people attended fan zones. The report, which was commissioned by the French Sports Ministry and produced by the Limoges Centre for Sports Law and Economics (CDES), includes the following highlights:

UEFA EURO 2016 generated a 1.22 billion Euro positive economic impact for France

Tourism spend across the tournament totalled 625.5 million Euros

613,000 tourists visited France to attend UEFA EURO 2016

Visitors on average stayed for 7.9 days, spending 154 Euros per day

95% of visitors intend to return to France

89% were satisfied with their experience

Etienne Thobois, Chief Executive of Paris 2024, said:

"Hosting this major international sporting event is a huge logistical operation and France efficiently delivered a great celebration. Very efficiently and with a real sense of joie de vivre. UEFA EURO 2016 showcased France’s expertise in delivering large events on the world stage.

"For example, we had over 4 million people in France and 1.2 million people in Paris celebrate safely in the fan zones, which gives a real sense of how we would share with the world an incredible, inspiring Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024."

Patrick Kanner, France’s Minister for Sport, said:

"This report clearly demonstrates that UEFA EURO 2016 generated a significant positive economic return for France as host nation. What is also particularly pleasing is that so many fans who came to France to attend the tournament were satisfied with their experience and the welcome they received. So much so that 95% intend to return to France as a result of their experiences.

"Looking ahead to the possibility of Paris hosting the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, I know that France would provide a very special French welcome to the world if we are successful in realising our 2024 dream."

Eight of the stadiums used in UEFA EURO 2016 will be used to host Olympic events if Paris is granted the right to stage the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
