(ATR) Paris 2024 closed the books on its Public Interest Group (Bid Committee) on Thursday while welcoming two new members to the executive board as the project moves to its next stage.
The Bid Committee ended its work with a surplus of 6.7 million Euros ($7.6 million), the equivalent of 10 percent of the overall budget. The money will be redistributed to the stakeholders that helped fund the Paris 2024 Bid Committee, but has been earmarked to fund initiatives supporting the development of sport.
"This is a very special day in the history and creation of our project," Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet said in a statement.
He called the budget surplus "a reflection of the hard work undertaken over a period of nearly three years, and we are especially proud of the fact that the public players who support us on a daily basis will reinvest the money entirely in the development of sport".
Earlier in the day, the Paris 2024 Executive Board welcomed two new members. Michel Cymes and Eric Pliez were both heavily involved in the bid phase.
Paris 2024 says Cymes will lend his expertise on all health issues, working with the "For a fit France" panel of experts and helping Paris 2024 in its bid to fight sedentary lifestyles and promote sport.
Pliez is heavily involved in leadership roles with a number of social charities and will be helping Paris 2024 in its efforts to promote sustainable employment in the city’s neighbourhoods and the growth of the social and solidarity economy.
They will take up their seats at the next executive board meeting.
For Roxana Maracineanu, the French Minister for Sport, Thursday's meeting at the Stade Jean Bouin was the first for her since being appointed to the executive board on September 4. The Stade Jean Bouin is the venue for the Olympic rugby sevens competitions for Paris 2024.
