Olympic Day 2014 -- USOC Hosts 1,000+ Events, Special Stamps in North Korea

Events are scheduled in 150 countries today to celebrate the birth of the modern Olympics.

Today's Olympic Day celebrations mark the 120th anniversary of the founding of the IOC.

The IOC posted videos of Michael Phelps swimming backwards, Usain Bolt playing cricket, and Lindsey Vonn playing tennis on their website to encourage Olympic Day participants to try something new.

Participants can visit the Olympic Day website to find an activity nearby and can post their results on social media using the hashtag #OlympicDay.

An estimated 500,000 people are expected to celebrate Olympic Day in the United States, where the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) is holding 1,023 events in 813 cities across all 50 states in the month of June.

This year, 488 professional athletes, including Sochi 2014 medalist Erin Hamlin and London 2012 medalists Gabby Douglas and Brenda Villa, will appear at USOC-sanctioned events.

In North Korea, the State Stamp Bureau of the DPRK has issued special stamps to commemorate the 120th anniversaryof the founding of the IOC.

The Fiji Association of Sport and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) held their annual fun run on June 21st in Suva, along with a sports fair. The fair emphasized the healthy aspects of a sport lifestyle and allowed participants to try their hand at the eight sports featured. An Olympic Day walk was held the same day in Nadi.

The Virgin Islands also hosted several Olympic Day celebrations on Saturday. Tortola held a two mile walk/run, as well as a ceremony to commemorate Sochi 2014 Olympian Peter Adam Crook. They also announced the selections for swimming, sailing, and athletics in the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games. A run was also held early Saturday morning in Virgin Gorda.

The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) held an Olympic Fair at the annual Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Teddy Bears’ Picnic in Ottawa on June 21st. The fair featured appearances from seventeen Olympic medalists and the mayor of Ottawa, as well as eight sports demonstrations from local teams.
