(ATR) The Olympic bid cities of Paris and Los Angeles will sign their respective host city contracts this week in Lima, Peru as the International Olympic Committee confirms their hosting responsibilities for the 2024 and 2028 Summer Games.
The ratification of each city’s hosting rights will come with little to no fanfare as a deal to award the 2024 and 2028 editions to Paris and Los Angeles was reached at an Extraordinary IOC Session in Lausanne in July.
Nonetheless, the IOC electorate will hear 25 minute presentations from the bid leaders of Paris 2024 and LA 2028 on the opening day of the Session in Lima, Sept. 13. The IOC members are fully expected to agree to the tripartite agreement reached between Paris and LA Mayors Anne Hidalgo and Eric Garcetti and IOC president Thomas Bach.
The main event of the Session follows the two-day meeting of the IOC Executive Board on Sept. 11 and 12. Day one of the IOC EB meeting will feature reports from the summer and winter sports federations, the Olympic Channel and Coordination Commissions for Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 Olympics as well as the Buenos Aires 2018 and Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympics. Bach will hold a press conference following the conclusion of day one.
Day two of the IOC EB focuses on remaining preparations for the upcoming PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics. After the EB session concludes, the Opening Ceremony of the Session will take place at Peru’s Gran National Theatre.
Tokyo 2020 CoComm chairman John Coates will update the IOC membership on Sept. 13 prior to the 2024 and 2028 host city confirmations. A joint presser with the IOC, Paris 2024 and LA 2028 will follow the signing of the host city contract which precedes updates for PyeongChang 2018, Beijing 2022, BA 2018 and Lausanne 2020.
Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski will deliver the keynote address of the Session on Sept. 14 prior to discussions on ethics, governance and the status of Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms midway through their implementation.
IOC Commissions deliver their reports to the Session on Sept. 15 along with the World Anti-Doping Agency and Court of Arbitration for Sport. The host city of the 2019 IOC Session will be confirmed as Milan, Rome later that day.
New member and IOC EB elections will take place on the final day of the Session, Sept. 16. Nine new members have been nominated to push the membership back over 100 and five candidates are competing for three spots on the Executive Board with the resignation of Patrick Hickey opening an extra spot on the board. The Lima Session will come to a close with a press conference from IOC president Thomas Bach.
Court to Rule on AIBA Takeover
The immediate management of the Olympic boxing federation is in the hands of a Swiss magistrate who is expected to make a ruling this week.
Around the Rings is told a decision is expected as early as Sept. 13 as to whether International Boxing Association executives had the authority to form an Interim Management Committee. The decision could be postponed until Sept. 16.
At AIBA’s July Executive Board meeting, 13 members began the process of calling a motion of no confidence against AIBA president CK Wu for his alleged mismanagement of AIBA finances and involvement in business deals that have left the federation with a reported $10 million in debt.
Wu has staunchly denied the claims and combated the attempts to oust him from the presidency, resulting in a barrage of letters sent to AIBA’s 201 National Federations from both sides over the past two months. The dispute did not have a major impact on the AIBA World Championships that recently concluded in Hamburg, Germany.
The IMC is seeking an Executive Committee meeting on Sept. 23 when the decision of the Swiss court should already be known. An Extraordinary AIBA Congress is also scheduled for November in Dubai where the motion of no confidence is expected to be held.
