(ATR) The new Minister of Sport for France is a popular choice with the Paris 2024 bid team.

Laura Flessel-Colovic is a double Olympic fencing champion and five-time Olympic medalist who also happens to be a member of the Paris 2024 Athletes’ Committee.

Paris 2024 says she "played an integral role" during this week’s visit to the French capital by the IOC Evaluation Commission.

Flessel-Colovic is one of 11 women that make up the 22-member Cabinet of newly elected President Emmanuel Macron.

"This appointment confirms the central role athletes play in the governance of sport in France. We look forward to continuing the work that has been going on for nearly two years with Laura Flessel-Colovic, as we look ahead to the IOC decision on the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Lima on 13 September," Paris 2024 co-chairs Tony Estanguet and Bernard Lapasset said in a statement.

The flag bearer for France at the London 2012 Games, Flessel-Colovic will now have the opportunity to help lead Paris to winning the bid to host the 2024 Olympics.

One of the events scheduled will feature Paris 2024 co-chair and triple Olympic kayak champion Tony Estanguet giving a demonstration of his sport on the Seine.
