(ATR) Talks have begun to put New York City in play for a 2024 bid from the US.
The Financial Times reports that Dan Doctoroff, who led the unsuccessful bid of New York City for the 2012 Olympics, has launched a private campaign to convince government leaders to bid for 2024.
The plan calls for the Games to be centered in the borough of Queens, home of New York state governor Andrew Cuomo. A spokesman for Doctoroff says the former bid leader believes the Olympics would be a catalyst for redevelopment.
Since leading the bid, Doctoroff has been deputy Mayor under the administration of Michael Bloomberg and is now chief executive of Bloomberg, the financial news services firm based in New YorkBoston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington DC
The Financial Times reports a source close to Cuomo says the governor is considering the proposal. Also key to any movement on the Olympics is the endorsement of Bill DeBlasio, Mayor of New York City for the past five months. He has in the past been cool to the idea of an Olympics.
Whether it is too late for New York City to enter into consideration is a matter for the US Olympic Committee to figure out. The USOC has already visited more than a half dozen cities in the past few months discussing the possibility of bidding for the Olympics.
Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles,Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington DC are in that group. The USOC was supposed to be deciding on a shortlist of that group perhaps within a few weeks. There was no immediate comment available from the USOC as to whether New York City could be included in its first round toward a possible 2024 bid.
The USOC has kept to a low-key, informal process so far in deciding whether it wants to bid for the 2024 Olympics. Letters from the USOC inviting cities to participate went out a year ago and the group being considered now is a result of that call for interest. Leaders of the USOC say they don’t want to force cities into an expensive bid campaign and would rather scrutinize each proposal and make executive decisions on which city should be selected. The matter is expected to be settled by vote of the USOC Board of Directors later this year.
In a process which really has not had any formal deadlines, it is quite possible that a latecomer proposal from New York City would still be welcomed by the USOC. Applications to the IOC for the first phase of bidding for 2024 will open in about one year from now. The IOC decision comes in 2017.
