(ATR) The city of Monterrey, Mexico is calling it quits on a possible bid for the 2023 Summer Youth Olympic Games.
The Monterrey City Olympic Foundation, in a statement released in Spanish, said "we believe that the current situation in the country, the national sport and the economy in the region make it impossible to continue our intention to run for the 4th Youth Olympic Games in 2023.
"Insisting on this application, before all that happens, it would be irresponsible and would endanger the reputation of the capital of Nuevo Leon to host international events."
The city says it has not given up on a bid down the line, saying "Monterrey is clear on its vocation as an Olympic city and reaffirms its commitment to channel all efforts to become an Olympic host in the future."
Beginning in 2023, the Youth Olympic Games will be organized in non-Olympic years. Buenos Aires will host the next summer edition of the YOG in 2018, with Lausanne picking up the winter YOG duties in 2020.
By the time Monterrey bids for another YOG, the makeup of the event could be very different from the winter YOG recently hosted by Lillehammer.
The IOC announced in February the formation of the YOG Tripartite Working Group led by Executive Board member Uğur Erdener.
The group’s goal, according to IOC president Thomas Bach is to "have a wide-ranging debate about potential improvements and adjustments of the overall format of the Games."
