Sochi Coordination Commission

The fifth IOC Coordination Commission in Sochi will take place Monday through Wednesday.

The 12-member panel, led by French IOC member Jean-Claude Killy, will make an inspection of construction progress for the Games, which are now a little more than 1,000 days away.

On Wednesday, the Commission will hold a press conference in Sochi.

ONOC General Assembly

The 17 member countries of the Oceania National Olympic Committees convene Wednesday through Sunday in Noumea, New Caledonia for their General Assembly.

Also making the trek are the three 2018 bid cities. The meeting in the former French colony is one of the last chances for the bids to make presentations.

While ONOC is the smallest of the continental National Olympic Committee organizations, it has an important status within the Olympic Movement. Five IOC members hail from ONOC countries.

Around the Rings will be on the scene for the five-day meeting.

UEFA Soccer Congress

Thirteen representatives from European soccer associations will vie for seven available Executive Committee seats Tuesday’s annual UEFA congress.

World Football INSIDER will be on the scene in Paris, where two of the European confederation’s seats on FIFA’s 24-man Executive Committee are also at stake.

Franz Beckenbauer of Germany will not stand for reelection, but countryman Theo Zwanziger is poised to succeed him. Spain’s Ángel María Villar Llona is set for another term as a FIFA VP.

Because Michael Platini as running unopposed for a second term as UEFA president, he’ll retain his Ex-Co seat by virtue of his office.

Tuesday Talk with Luge Leader

Luge has its team relay event up for addition to the Winter Olympic program ahead of Sochi 2014.

Around the Rings caught up with International Luge Federation president Josef Fendt not long after he hosted IOC president Jacques Rogge at a World Cup event in order to show him the unique race format.

Check back later for Fendt’s take on why luge deserves another Olympic discipline as well as his analysis of preparationsfor Innsbruck 2012 and Sochi 2014 in this week’s edition of Tuesday Talk.

30th Anniversary for Chinese Taipei

An Olympic agreement between the IOC and Taiwan turns 30 on Wednesday.

The deal allows Taiwan to compete in the Games under the name Chinese Taipei.

The IOC agreed to the terms in 1979, but the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee didn’t follow suit until early 1981, hence the 30th anniversary this week.

Most other international sporting events also allow Taiwan to compete as Chinese Taipei.

Track Cycling World Champs

The UCI track cycling world championships kick off Wednesday in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.

Top riders from 41 countries are in the Netherlands this week for the UCI track cycling world championships.

Russia will send the most athletes to the starting line, but favorites Great Britain won’t be far behind.

Events kick off Wednesday in Apeldoorn and run through Sunday.
