Olympic Agenda 2020 Working Groups

The 13 working groups charged with coming up with ideas for change at the IOC begin meeting in Lausanne June 18. Named just a month ago by President Thomas Bach, each one is headed by an IOC member and includes experts in sport and the Olympics as well as "outsiders" such as Google chairman Eric Schmidt.

The working groups will meet through next Monday, June 23, Olympic Day. The date marks the founding of the IOC in 1894.

Olympic Flag Turns 100

June 17 will be celebrated this year by the IOC as the 100th anniversary of the Olympic flag that’s used today.

Other birthdays from the IOC include Patrick Hickey of Ireland and Paul Tergat of Kenya. ATR editor Ed Hula is also said to be sharing the same birthday as the Olympic flag. He is not 100.

Ahead at World Cup

Over the course of the week, 32 teams will continue their quest to be crowned World Cup Champions. Around the Rings'Mark Bisson is on the scene in Brazil providing reports. Some notable group play matches include:

Ghana vs. United States, Natal, June 16

The United States aims to take points in the "group of death," Group G. Ghana knocked the United States out of the last two World Cups: in the group stage in 2006 and in a memorable round of sixteen game in 2010.

Brazil vs. Mexico, Fortaleza, June 17

Both countries won their first match and look to take the lead in group A. Brazil beat Croatia 3-1, while Mexico defeated Cameroon 1-0. Brazil is looking to win its sixth World Cup, while Mexico has never been past the quarterfinals.

Uruguay vs. England, Sao Paolo, June 19

Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez goes against the country where his club, Liverpool, is based. Uruguay is hoping their 2014 campaign in Brazil fares just as well as the last time the country hosted the World Cup in 1950.

Belgium vs. Russia, Rio de Janeiro, June 22

The two favorites of Group H face off. Belgium is hoping their current "golden generation" can cause some surprises at the 2014 World Cup. Russia, the 2018 World Cup hosts, look to prove their disappointing Euro 2012 appearance was a fluke.
