IOC Executive Board Convenes

The IOC’s powerful Executive Board meets April 5 and 6 in London on the sidelines of the SportAccord Convention.

A number of important topics are planned for discussion during the meeting, including which sport disciplines will be added to the Olympic program for the 2014 Games in Sochi.

The EB will also discuss potential new members for the IOC.

Updates on national Olympic committees in India, Kuwait and Ghana will also be presented. Both Kuwait and Ghana are currently suspended while India could be if the Indian Olympic Association’s autonomy is not preserved.

SportAccord Graces Olympic Host City

Around the Rings will be on the scene in London as the umbrella association for international sports federations gathers this week for its annual SportAccord Convention.

Expect daily coverage from ATR editor Ed Hula and European editor Mark Bission throughout the five-day frenzy, including a constant stream of exclusive interviews with the likes of IOC marketing boss Gerhard Heiberg, lead negotiator for U.S. TV rights Richard Carrion and Rio coordination commission chair Nawal El Moutawakel.

Sessions begin Monday and run through Friday. Among the highlights will be panels on London 2012 and Rio 2016 scheduled for Wednesday as well as presentations from the three 2018 bid cities on Thursday.

Also be sure to check out this week’s Tuesday Talk with SportAccord president Hein Verbruggen for his thoughts on illegal betting, the London velodrome and the growth of multi-sport events.

Men’s Curling World Champs

Host country Canada looks to defend its title from last year and add to its gold medal from Vancouver at the championships just underway in Regina.

Norway lost in the final match on both occasions but may unveil some crazy new pants, a sure way to steal some attention if not the men’s curling crown.

Competition kicked off Saturday and runs through next Sunday.

Medicine, Sport Meet in Monaco

The IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport runs Thursday through Saturday in Monte Carlo.

The bulk of the speakers are doctors, professors and researchers from some of the world’s leading universities.
