(ATR) With every competition of the 2015 season, the world governing body of modern pentathlon has been looking ahead to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
On Tuesday, modern pentathlon president Klaus Schormann told Around the Ringsthat the federation is even in talks to potentially add a new event to its competition schedule for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Dr. Schormann spoke with me on the heels of a successful world championship in Berlin, Germany.
In referencing a fencing bonus round, added to the round robin fencing stage of competition by the modern pentathlon congress last year, Schormann said that athletes and spectators have embraced the change in format.
He also said that the federation is working with Tokyo 2020 on possibly adding a mixed relay event to the modern pentathlon program. The idea is part of efforts from federation leaders to apply reforms set forth by the IOC's Olympic Agenda 2020.
Schormann told ATR that right now, every competition provides opportunities to prepare for Rio 2016.
