(ATR) U.S. First Lady Melania Trump says the 2018 Winter Olympics will provide the chance to bring the world together.
Mrs. Trump is in Seoul along with President Trump, who is on a 12-day swing through five Asian nations.
On her first day in Seoul, the First Lady was just one of the stars at a reception at the residence for the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. Along with Mrs. Trump was Minho, a member of K-pop group SHINee, a huge favorite among the middle schoolers invited to the reception.
The event, broadcast live on Korean TV, was a promotion for Girls Play 2, a program that encourages physical activity among young girls.
Mrs. Trump said she was sure Korea was looking forward to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics next February. She said the Games will be an opportunity to "bring the world together".
PyeongChang 2018 President Hee Beom Lee was among the guests, along with tiger mascot Soohorang. Lee presented her with a stuffed toy version of the mascot.
She told the middle school students in the audience that boys and girls should have equal chances to compete in sport. She told the students to learn teamwork and how physical activity can relieve stress.
After the speech she watched an ice hockey demonstration and had photos taken with the middle school girls and singer Minho.
The Trumps came to Korea from Tokyo, where the president played golf with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. They played at Kasumagaseki Country Club on the outskirts of Tokyo, the venue for golf in the 2020 Olympics.
Trump heads to Beijing next, the third Asian Olympic city in a row on this journey. It is not known whether any mention of the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing is included in this stop.
The Asian journey of the U.S. President will continue to Vietnam after China, where he will participate in a regional summit and is likely to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. The trip ends next week in the Philippines.
The music star offered his take on being a successful pop artist and the similarities to sport.
"There are a lot of similarities between singers and athletes. You have to show an impressive image on stage, you have to show your skills while doing your best in matches, you have to practice hard, you have to maintain your body, and thankfully, you receive a lot of cheers," he said.
