(ATR) For the first time in 40 years there’s a new president of the Pan American Sports Organization.
Julio Cesar Maglione of Uruguay is the choice by acclamation to lead PASO, which represents the 41 National Olympic Committees of the Americas. Delegates from all 41 NOCs met in Miami, Florida, April 11 to approve Maglione for a term that will end in 2016.
The veteran sports leader will serve in a caretaker capacity while PASO sorts out the changes coming following the death in February of Mario Vazquez Rana, who took the reins of PASO in 1975. Maglione, 79, is in the final year of his IOC membership and is the president of FINA, the international aquatics federation,as well as the Uruguay NOC.
The election of Maglione was one of only two items on the agenda for the Miami meeting. Fittingly enough, item two was simply titled The Future of PASO.
Vazquez Rana, a Mexicanbusinessman, wielded influence across the Americas and the world. Not only was he PASO president: he led the Association Of National Olympic Committees for 30 years and chaired Olympic Solidarity, the fund that provides hundreds of millions of dollars in
