(ATR) The mayor who worked to bring the 2028 Olympics to Los Angeles will not run for U.S. President in 2020.

Eric Garcetti announced on Tuesday his intention to not enter the field of candidates for the 2020 election. Garcetti, a Democrat, had been named as a potential candidate, and embarked on numerous trips around the country fueling speculation about a run.

"Reflecting on those travels and recognizing the incredible opportunity that I have every single day as mayor of this great town," Garcetti said, as reported by POLITICO. "I realized that this is what I am meant to do, this is where I want to be, and this is a place where we have so much exciting work to finish."

Garcetti was one of the main boosters of the 2028 Olympics, travelling to different events such as the 2016 Association of National Olympic Committees General Assembly and the 2017 IOC Session to promote the bid. Los Angeles originally bid for the 2024 Olympics against Paris, but accepted hosting the 2028 Olympics as part of a compromise with the IOC.

LA 2028 has begun assembling its organizing committee although the Games remain almost a decade a away. A joint marketing agreement with the United States Olympic Committee will allow LA 2028 to begin pursuing commercial opportunities later this year.

The IOC is scheduled to hold its first project review of LA 2028 in late September and early October, although it has yet to replace Patrick Baumann as the LA 2028 Coordination Commission chair. Baumann made a visit to Los Angeles in August 2018 to discuss how money the IOC gave to LA 2028 was being used to promote youth sports.

Garcetti’s term as Los Angeles mayor will end in January 2023, as he is ineligible to run again due to term limits.
