LA 2024 leaders today marked the conclusion of a week of world-class international sport in Los Angeles, as the three Copa America Centenario 2016’s matches at the Rose Bowl and the Wrestling World Cup at The Forum in Inglewood came to successful conclusions having demonstrated the City of Angels’ capacity for staging major elite sports events.
Bid leaders congratulated Copa America and applauded the Rose Bowl for successfully hosting three Copa America Centenario matches over the course of six action-packed days. LA 2024 also congratulated United World Wrestling, USA Wrestling, and Titan Mercury Wrestling Club for successfully staging the 2016 Freestyle World Cup, featuring eight world-class teams from Azerbaijan, Georgia, India, Iran, Mongolia, Russia, Turkey and host nation the United States. The Candidature Committee pointed to both events’ smooth and safe operational success as "further proof that LA is a Games-ready city," boosted by fans ready to "warmly welcome the world’s greatest athletes."
More than 160,000 fans attended Copa America Centenario matches at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in between Saturday, June 4 and Thursday, June 9, featuring six sides from the PASO region. The three-game stretch kicked off with an intense stalemate between Brazil and Ecuador, continued with Colombia’s 2-1 victory over Paraguay and culminated in a packed-house Mexico 2-0 victory against Jamaica. The Rose Bowl is one of two Copa America Centenario venues located in California, along with Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
The 2016 Freestyle World Cup was held at The Forum in Inglewood, the proposed home of the Olympic gymnastics competition should LA be awarded the honor of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024. The final international wrestling tournament on American soil before the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, gold medal honors went to the Iranian team, who defeated Russia 5-3 in the gold medal match to claim a fifth consecutive Freestyle World Cup title.
LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman said: "On behalf of LA 2024, we’d like to extend our congratulations to US Soccer, United World Wrestling, USA Wrestling and Titan Mercury Wrestling Club for hosting an outstanding week of sport, elite competition and friendship in the City of Angels. The seamless, professional hosting of the more than 160,000 fans in our city over the past week is further proof that LA is a Games-ready city. We have the experience, we have the sporting infrastructure, and, most importantly, we have the passionate fans eager to fill the seats and warmly welcome the world’s greatest athletes to the City of Angels."
Los Angeles' professional sports teams combined draw more than 10 million spectators per year, providing strong experience hosting top sports competitions.
LA 2024 CEO Gene Sykes said: "The Rose Bowl and The Forum’s safe, successful hosting of these prestigious international competitions are reminders that the City of Angels is no stranger to hosting large-scale events with global appeal. From the 1932 and 1984 Games, to events like the Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes that take place in our city every year, LA consistently redefines the gold standard for global event hosting. Our Games-ready infrastructure, along with our excellent relationships with the local sports, labor and business communities, will allow us to focus entirely on creating the best possible Games experience in 2024 should we be awarded the honor of being named Host City."
