Lausanne's University of Music and Lausanne 2020 launch musical creation contest

Lausanne, November 26th, 2018 – The organising committee of the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, Lausanne 2020, and Lausanne’s University of Music (HEMU), an institution known for its high quality teaching and commitment to regional musical communities, have launched a contest to create the official music for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

In January 2020, Lausanne will host the 3rd edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games: a fantastic opportunity to showcase Switzerland and its talents. Both HEMU’s students and alumni are invited to use their talents to create the song that will accompany the best young athletes in the world before and during the Games. This song will be the musical anthem of the 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games.

A jury composed of music experts will be asked to select the winner, whose musical creation will be produced and broadcasted during the entire period of the Games.

Ian Logan, CEO of Lausanne 2020, said: "We want to involve young people in the preparation and organisation of the event, through partnerships with Universities in the state and all over western Switzerland. Our ambition is to build a strong educational legacy that will serve the younger generations, the leaders of tomorrow."

Mathieu Fleury, Executive Director of HEMU, added: "This is not the only project we are working on for Lausanne 2020, as our students will also work on the music for the medal ceremonies. It is a great pride for our institution and its musicians to be able to participate in such a prestigious project, which will resonate throughout Switzerland and beyond. We wish the best of luck to all of our students so that they can give the best of themselves to showcase their talent!"

This project is in line with Lausanne 2020’s mission to engage youth in the organisation of the event. Other universities and schools are also involved, including the Romandie School of Art and Communication (ERACOM), where more than a hundred students have worked on the design of Lausanne 2020’s mascot, on the visual identity of the Games and their pictograms.

Also, the State School of Arts of Lausanne (ECAL) and the State School of Construction have worked together to build the Olympic torch, medal platters and podiums for the event. Furthermore, the students of EHL, the Lausanne Hotel School, one of the most renown in the world, developed the nutritional concept for the athletes as well as a detailed list of services and activities that will be offered to the residents of the Youth Olympic Village.
