(ATR) The winning design has been chosen for the athlete’s village in Lausanne for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

Zurich-based architecture firm Dürig AG submitted the winning design dubbed "Vortex." It comprises of a single circular building designed to house all athletes and meet all requirements of an athlete’s village as set out by the IOC.

The Lausanne 2020 bid committee says the ring-shaped building clearly pays tribute to the Olympic Movement and is also symbolic of the IOC’s 100-year anniversary of being headquartered in the city.

Lausanne - along with Brașov, Romania - is one of two cities bidding to host the games.

Brașov successfully hosted the 2013 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival, an event resembling the Youth Olympic Games.

If Lausanne loses to Brașov, organizers say they will build the athlete village anyway. In the Lausanne bid, it designates the future use of the facility as a student housing complex. The structure is set to house 630 rooms, 475 studios and 50 apartments.

Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in January 2017. The bid committee is aiming for a completion date in the back-half of 2019.

The IOC will choose between the two European hosts during the 128th IOC session on July 31 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
