(ATR) The Los Angeles City Council will have more involvement with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics than it did with the city’s bid for the 2024 Summer Games.
LA 2028 released its Memorandum of Understanding with the city and the United States Olympic Committee on Aug. 9, outlining the new provisions given to the City Council to ensure nothing goes awry with an extra four years of lead time before the Games return to LA.
"My top priorities in this process are to protect Los Angeles taxpayers and create new opportunities for young Angelenos to play sports, and be healthy," LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement. "This new MOU ensures that our City priorities remain front-and-center in LA 2028’s preparations for the Games."
Included in the MOU are provisions that give the city representation on the LA 2028 Board of Directors, require City consent over any significant venue changes and quarterly LA 2028 presentations to the Council in its first three years of operations.
LA 2028 must also acquire additional insurance and fund an independent review of its budget.
The LA City Council still needs to approve the new MOU at its meeting on Aug. 11. Prior to the City Council meeting and vote, the ad hoc Olympic Committee will discuss the new proposal and pass forward its recommendation to the full membership. It is expected the council will rubber stamp the changes.
"If approved by the Los Angeles City Council on Friday, this new MOU would enhance the strong provisions that were developed to protect the City of Los Angeles from financial risk when it was a candidate to host the Games in 2024," LA 2028 said in a statement.
If approved, the International Olympic Committee can move forward with awarding both the Summer 2024 and 2028 Games at its Session in Lima, Peru on Sep. 13. The IOC has reached a tripartite agreement with the cities of Paris and Los Angeles to forego the usual host city election and give the 2024 edition to Paris followed by LA in 2028.
The IOC membership is also expected to rubber stamp the unprecedented procedure.
