(ATR) Prosecutors in Kenya say Kip Keino is not suspected of wrongdoing involving a financial scandal from the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Keino, 78, voluntarily surrendered to authorities on October 18, cutting short an overseas trip to return to Nairobi, when he received word he was wanted by police.
Prosecutors say $500,000 in state funds meant for the Kenyan team in Rio is missing. While he was Kenya NOC president at the time, Keino has told authorities he was not a signatory on the accounts in question. Keino was released after making a statement to the authorities. They say the athletics great will now be a state’s witness.
Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario is among the officials still facing charges.
Reports from Kenya media say that politicians have been lobbying the Department of Public Prosecutions to reconsider Keino’s supposed involvement. The reports say the IOC had also expressed its support of the former IOC member. Keino is now an honorary member.
Keino won the first of two Olympic gold medals in the 1500 m at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, 50 years ago this month.
