(ATR) Peruvian Olympic Committee president Jose Quinones tells Around the Rings the IOC is planning a trip to Lima by the end of November.
Quinones says that only IOC staff and no members will visit the Peruvian capital to check on preparations for the 2017 IOC Session.
The annual meeting of Olympic leaders is scheduled to take place from Sep. 11-17 at the Lima Convention Center. The center was completed in 2015 and is the largest meeting place in Peru with the capacity for nearly 10,000 people. The IOC Session is expected to draw 5,000 delegates from across the Olympic Movement.
The session will be highlighted by the selection of the host city of the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris are now entering the final stages of the bid race following their presentations to the ANOC General Assembly last week in Doha, Qatar.
The IOC Executive Board will meet on Sep. 11-12 in Peru ahead of the start of the session. The final presentations for the 2024 bid cities will take place on Sep. 13 before the IOC vote to select the host city later that day.
A two-day Olympism in Action Congress will begin on Sep. 14 before the IOC Session resumes from Sep. 16-17.
The IOC visit will likely inspect the convention center as well as the Westin Hotel just three kilometers away where the IOC members will be hosted throughout the event. The remaining delegates will stay at the Hilton nearly 20 minutes away from the center.
Lima won the bid to host the 130th IOC Session in December 2014, beating out Helsinki, Finland to become the third South American city since 2013 to host the major event. Buenos Aires, Argentina played host in 2013 while Rio de Janeiro, Brazil hosted in 2016 ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics.
