(ATR) The IOC Paris 2024 Coordination Commission deems changes to the Parisian Olympic project "in line with Agenda 2020".
Earlier this week Paris 2024 signed a co-financing agreement with the city of Paris and the French government for Olympic venues and other related projects. The co-financing proposal put the total investment by the French state at $1.62 billion.
Included in the financing agreement were changes to the aquatics center and the Olympic Village to combat rising costs. The aquatics center was changed from a permanent aquatics stadium to a 15,000 temporary venue.
However, the facility will remain an aquatics center post-Games, with a "redefined concept" according to organizers. The Olympics will distribute nine pools around the Saint-Denis region in the northern suburbs of Paris as part of its legacy.
Paris 2024 also announced changes to the athletes village. The village will remain in the same place, and power lines will be migrated underground, with the addition of new green spaces.
"I have been particularly impressed by the ambition of all of the stakeholders involved in this project to take advantage of the opportunity of the Games to create a springboard for the city, region and nation," Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant, Paris 2024 CoComm chair said in a statement following two days of meetings.
"There is a precise focus on making sure that the basics of budget and delivery are under control while simultaneously presenting to us a project that is ambitious in its objectives in areas like employment, transport and their associated legacies, as well as in its desire to bring a new generation to sport and the Olympic values."
The first meeting day for the 2024 CoComm took place under the Eiffel Tower in the heart of Paris. There, basketball star Tony Parker was unveiled as an ambassador for the Paris Games and took part in a basketball demonstration. The IOC was given a tour of Olympic and Paralympic venues at Stade de France, the Grand Palais, the Champs-Élysées and the Champs de Mars as part of the two-day meeting.
Los Angeles 2028 was represented at the Coordination Commission visit by an observer team. As part of the dual allocation of the 2024 and 2028 Games the IOC has encouraged Los Angeles to collaborate with Paris before creating its organizing committee.
"The IOC’s visit to Paris for these two days of work has allowed us to share our ambition: to make Games that are different, cheaper, useful and spectacular, which will write a chapter in our country’s history and more generally that of the Olympic Movement," Tony Estanguet, Paris 2024 President said. "The partnership with the IOC and all of Paris 2024’s partners will be key in implementing and building the success of these Games of a new era."
