IOC Advice to Boston: Slow Down

(ATR) Boston 2024 chairman Steve Pagliuca says that the biggest advice the bid team received from the IOC was "to take your time" on crafting a sustainable bid plan.

Pagliuca told WBUR in an interview given to Around the Rings that "that openness to have that back and forth was really gratifying."

"I think it’s really going to advance our bid and our understanding in a big way," Pagliuca added.

"There were some interesting ideas they had about how to utilize venues, with maybe moving some events around so we can get better utilization out of larger venues so more people could attend, to make it a spectator friendly, athlete friendly Olympics."

Boston 2024, city officials and United States Olympic Committee leadership met with Olympic Games executive director Christophe Dubi and head of bid city relations Jacqueline Barrett on May 27 as part of the IOC’s "invitation phase" of bidding.

"They said take your time, talk to your community and figure out what is the best long-term sustainable fit for your venue.

"We’re not going to rush into things, and we’re really going to roll out a plan on a matrix that is good for Boston and good for the Olympics, so I think we can find all 33 venue sites that are great for Boston and great for the Olympics."

USOC chief executive Scott Blackmun said that the meetings were more about "general directions" the bid should go in before submitting a plan to the IOC in September.

"I think Boston learned an awful a lot about the IOCs Agenda 2020, and I think it was a great opportunity to put some names to some faces that begin a dialogue that lasts a long time," Blackmun said.

"Agenda 2020 is real, and today is the most tangible representation that we’ve seen that the IOC is very earnest in changing the bid process, and is changing the Games in a way that makes it more beneficial for cities to embrace the Games."

Blackmun reiterated that the USOC is "100 percent" behind the Boston bid and that the partnership between Boston 2024 and the USOC will work hard to get public support for the bid before the 2016 referendum.

"The ball is in our court to tell the story of Boston 2024, and then we will let the citizens of Boston decide."
