Indonesia Elects New NOC Chief

(ATR) A new NOC leader means the loss of an IOC member.

(ATR) The Indonesian National Olympic Committee elects business tycoon Erick Thohir as its new chairman. He will succeed Rita Subowo who has served her limit of two terms.

Subowo, who by virtue of her NOC presidency was nominated and elected to the IOC in 2007, will relinquish her IOC seat according to the IOC communications department. With her departure the IOC numbers 98 members. She was the only IOC member from Indonesia.

Thohir, 44, had previously served as vice president of the INOC. Thohir defeated the only other candidate, E. F. Hamid, 31 to 27 in the November 1 vote.

Thohir’s business enterprises in Indonesia cover the media, transport and other industries. He is the owner of football club Inter Milan and US football club DC United and is one of the owners of the Philadelphia 76ers NBA franchise.
