(ATR) The President of Indonesia tells Thomas Bach Indonesia is ready for the Olympics.
Joko Widodo, president of Indonesia made clear his intentions in an hour-long meeting with Bach at Merdeka Palace, the official residence of Indonesia.
"After the excellent experience of the Asian Games we now believe that we can host the very biggest sporting event," Widodo said on Sept. 1.
"In Indonesia we believe we can host the Olympic Games 2032."
It wasn’t clear what city would bid, although it stands to reason Jakarta, the capital and host of the ongoing Asian Games would be the host.
Bach replied to Widodo: "The IOC really appreciates Indonesia's candidature for 2032.
"With the great success of the Asian Games Indonesia has demonstrated it has all the ingredients to organize Olympic Games in a very successful way," Bach added.
"Here in Indonesia there is a great combination of friendliness and efficiency and this us what the Games are about. The Asian Games build a very solid foundation for such a candidature. It is a great decision which gives the youth of this young country a vision for the future and capitalizes on the success of the Asian Games."
Erick Thohir, chairman of INASGOC, the Jakarta Asian Games organizing committee, and president of the Indonesian National Olympic Committee said at a press conference the NOC will formally submit a bid "hopefully after the Asian Games".
Thorir predicted the biggest issues for an Olympic bid would be electricity and traffic management--two keen challenges for the Asian Games.
"We have a plan A, a plan B and a plan C. It’s not working 100 percent but we are solving the issues, not running away from the issues."
He also encouraged Indonesian sport federations to "get aggressive" bidding for world-class sporting events.
"We need to have lots of working events in Indonesia."
A vote selecting the 2032 Olympics is expected to take place in 2025. India has said it would bid for the 2032 Olympics with others likely to come in the coming years.
