The German city unveiled the first part of its campaign for either the 2024 or 2028 Olympics. Called "Wir Wollen Spielen," or "We want to play," the campaign was officially launched on Monday with a massive social media push attempting to rally the city’s sport culture behind the bid.
Berlin is one of two cities the German Olympic committee is considering for a 2024 or 2028 bid. Hamburg is the second.
According to a story posted on German broadcaster DW’s website, the "Berlympics" (as they would be called) pose a big challenge to Games backers.
"Berlin needs to make itself chic if the world is visiting us," the broadcaster was quoted. "No more shilly-shallying around - there must be responsibility."
Should everything come to fruition, the campaign team, which is led by a group of six including a photographer and business leaders, say a Berlin Olympics would be "the most colorful and thrilling games of all time."
The IOC will select a 2024 host in 2017. Several countries have expressed interest in bidding for 2024 including France, Italy, the United States and others.
A report on Wednesday from Germany’s DPA says a decision on the Euro 2024 football tournament will come in 2018. Germany has expressed interest in hosting that event as well, posing a potential conflict of dates for a German Olympics.
