The board of the International Canoe Federation has approved a new canoe sprint program proposal for the Paris 2024 Olympic program, brought about by the loss of 12 athlete quotas.
The board approved a program it believes will provide incentives for all athletes to continue to strive to compete at the Olympics. While canoeing had some athlete quotas cut by the IOC for Paris 2024, it was imperative that all athletes could still have the ability to contest winning their ticket to the Olympic Games.
It will also provide maximum opportunity for athletes to double up in events, giving more opportunities for competitors to win medals.
The ICF canoe sprint Olympic programme proposal will be presented to the IOC Executive Board on December 7th for their consideration as part of the Olympic Games programme for Paris 2024.
The men’s and women’s K1 200 will not be contested in Paris. Under the changes, the men’s K2 1000 and C2 1000 will both become 500 metre events.
There will be K4 500 races for both men and women. The blue riband events of K1 1000 for men, C1 1000m and K1 500 for women remain unchanged.
The women’s C1 200 and C2 500, which will be raced at an Olympics for the first time next year in Tokyo, remain unchanged for Paris 2024.
The ICF board also approved formal competition rules for stand up paddling to be used at the 2021 ICF SUP World Championships, new guidelines allowing refugee athletes to compete at international events, and an update to the anti-doping code.
