Press release from Australian Olympic Committee
Ian Chesterman who is preparing to lead his sixth Australian Olympic Team to the Olympic Winter Games in South Korea in 2018 has been elected a Vice President of the AOC by his colleagues on the AOC Executive, replacing Peter Montgomery. He was the only candidate.
Chesterman, from Launceston, is in his fourth term on the AOC Executive since becoming a member in 2001.
"Being appointed as Vice President is a great honour," Chesterman said. "I thank my colleagues on the Executive, especially John Coates, for their support and I look forward to making an on-going contribution to the success of both our summer and winter Teams."
AOC President John Coates said: "Ian has made an enormous contribution to the AOC during his 15 years on the Executive and his elevation to Vice President is thoroughly deserved."
"He has been a driving force in the success of our Winter Teams and in the formation of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) which has produced so many champions. Ian has been at the forefront of our emergence as a force as a Winter sports nation. He has the respect of everyone who has worked with him".
Chesterman also plays a key role in the running of the Australian Olympic Committee. He sits on the AOC Finance Commission, AOC Audit and Risk Committee and he is a director of the Australian Olympic Foundation (AOF) and also sits on its Audit and Risk Committee.
He remains a director of the OWIA and is Chair of its Audit Committee.
Born in Burnie, Chesterman returned with his family from Melbourne to Tasmania in 2006.
He has been appointed Chef de Mission of the Australian Winter Olympic Team to compete in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018, his 6th time in the role.
Chesterman’s Olympic honour role as Chef de Mission reads as follows:
Nagano Japan 1998
Salt Lake City USA 2002
Torino Italy 2006
Vancouver Canada 2010
Sochi Russia 2014
PyeongChang South Korea 2018
He was also the Australian team Chef de Mission at the Youth Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer in February this year.
Peter Montgomery, a four-time Olympian in water polo, announced his retirement from the AOC last week after over 40 years of service to the Olympic Movement.
"I would like to congratulate Peter on his extraordinary contribution to the Olympic movement and his support and friendship over many years" Chesterman said. "He leaves big shoes to fill as he’s been an exemplary Vice President. I will no doubt be calling on him for some guidance."
